For Tour Guides Showing Young People Places of Interest

Student disruption during school trips to places of interest, such as museums, historical buildings and activity centres is not commonplace but its frequency is increasing. This is of particular concern for tour guides and leaders who aim to make the visit educationally valuable, fun and exciting, then find themselves tasked with maintaining discipline too! No easy task for the experienced and fully-trained teacher who has position and authority, but for tour guides, especially where they have no formal teaching experience, this can be an even greater challenge.

Common problems include arrogance from students “you’re not a teacher so..”; 'pack' behaviour from groups of students; students who won’t put away mobile phones when asked, who won’t behave quietly or those who just decide it would be good fun to take out their frustrations on the tour guide because they're bored.

This course explores the dichotomy between what the tour guide needs and what the students need. It includes tips for simple changes that can bring these needs closer together to minimise disruption.  It helps develop techniques and strategies for coping with and supporting 'difficult' students, ending with a win-win situation.

It is a highly practical interactive course for tour guides, or other support staff, who wish to develop their student management skills further.  It will also provide an opportunity for participants to compare different techniques of dealing with challenging pupils and considers which approaches may work best in a range of situations.

Learning Styles Used
The course is interactive and includes formal input, group work and lots of practise of new strategies. There will be minimal theoretical input although all strategies come from a sound research basis.  Staff will have lots of opportunity to discuss issues, share good practice and try out techniques in a safe, supportive environment.

Internal Staff Training and Development

This training workshop, along with most of our other best practice training workshops, can be delivered as an internal training course at your premises. Even with groups as small as 6-8 delegates, the course fees per person for internal training workshops can be lower than for open events. The potential savings are even greater, if the travel time and the travel costs of the delegates are included.

Running training workshops internally is very convenient and it allows the participants to explore how key issues will impact on them and their organization. Then as a team they can begin to agree upon a development action plan, with priorities.
