Embedding Practical Support for Vulnerable People
This highly practical and pragmatic workshop builds on the foundations laid by related our workshop on “understanding and meeting the latest legal and Inspection requirements for Safeguarding”.
In so doing, this workshop explores how organisations can endeavour to ensure their approaches for safeguarding implementation are well thought through to support individuals; it aims to help organisations prepare better and minimise the risk of incident, poor inspection results and litigation as well as the adverse publicity that can accompany poor performance in the area of safeguarding.
The workshop is designed to identify strategies for improvement to practice - with an increasing number of partnerships and the need to work collaboratively, this is no mean feat. Participants are likely to leave with a variety of answers as well as food for thought; the workshop will include plenty of opportunity to explore, learn and consider new approaches and techniques, challenge existing practice and share information with others.
Please note: This workshop focuses on pragmatic and effective ways to improve practical implementation; it does not cover the more compliance-orientated aspects such as policies and procedures or associated legislation. These are covered in the related workshop mentioned in paragraph 1 above. However the legislative requirements do underpin the reasons for the workshop and why mechanisms need to be in place to ensure the safety of individuals.
For Whom
This highly participative and interactive workshop is designed to help identify strategies for an organisational approach for providing and improving the opportunities for ensuring learners are safe. Because everyone in an organisation is responsible for safeguarding, front level staff, who may not have senior levels of authority, are particularly welcomed.
Through exploration, this workshop should enable participants to:
- Develop a greater understanding of the safeguarding agenda
- Gain greater appreciation of the Ofsted framework and the impact of special measures
- Explore those likely to be most at risk particularly relating to the 14-19 Reform
- Identify where cause for concern may occur and share ways to encourage disclosure of underlying considerations across diverse client groups
- Recognise where gaps exist in current practice and identify strategies to redress those gaps
CONTENT
Pre-Attendance Activity
Delegates planning to attend this workshop need to identify and bring along examples of their own organisation’s procedures to relate theory practice during the afternoon session. Examples could include safeguarding related policies and procedures, self assessment, outcomes from health and safety data gathering, feedback survey forms or observation report analyses.
Session 1 - The Background behind the Safeguarding Agenda
This session provides a short introduction and context setting, without dwelling on the titles and content of the legislation the focus will be about perceptions and interpretations of safeguarding. Practical activities will be provided to maximise learning opportunities. The session will make reference to the types of incidents and issues that have lead to the latest focus on safeguarding; it outlines the rules, regulations and legislation that is in place to protect young people, together with the potential consequences of incident and/or breach.
Session 2 – Informing Vulnerable People
Session 2 explores the emerging challenges brought about by the diversity of delivery following the 14-19 Reform. Links will also be made to the requirements in the inspection frameworks and what these look like in practice. Group diversity will be explored and reference made to vulnerable people - how to help them understand the risks they may face, the support structures in place to protect them and what they should do if they feel worried. Areas to be included are:

- Collaborative provision
- Teaching and learning activities
- Technology
- Data
- Analysis and evaluation
- Measuring impact
- Setting targets
- Reporting and responsibility within a partnership
- Assessment
Session 4 – Action Planning
The day concludes with time allocated for participants to consider how they can use the outcomes from the previous sessions to improve the completeness and effectiveness of their existing procedures and practices. Participants who have completed the pre-attendance activity are likely to gain the most from this session.

Certificates of Professional Development.
Formal Certificates of Development will be issued, by post, to participants who complete this workshop. These certificates will detail the key learning aims and the face-to-face learning hours undertaken, enabling participants to update their CPD records and logs accordingly. The workshop also allows time, during the day, for participants to reflect on and record their personal learning development and consider how best to apply the knowledge gained on return to work. This element of the programme is designed to maximise the benefits from attending and enable participants to make better review judgments when recording their CPD activities.
