Understanding & Using Data to Improve Performance & Inspection Results

Late in 2009 Ofsted stopped updating the Provider Performance Report and ceased using it as a data source before or during Inspection.   The key data sources now used are the QSR data and other information , held on the Provider Gateway.  

For success at inspection, providers need to understand fully what data is being used to assess their performance and be able to produce internal data that complements, supports and validates the official headline figures. Most importantly, providers must know how to use the data to improve performance both generally and in underperforming areas.

Feedback from Inspection continually suggests that many do not understand nor use data effectively.  Changes to the data sets used are likely to compound this problem.

Key staff are, all too frequently, unaware of what reports are telling them; so they do not share information and data with other staff to drive up quality.  Too few are able to demonstrate how sub-areas of learning and/or differing centres/sub contractors/assessors or tutors are performing. 

In other cases, providers are too focussed on the last full year of data and are ignoring longer term or short term performance trends.

For providers to perform well at Inspection it is imperative that all key staff regularly examine the QSR data, can understand, dissect and validate it and have confidence in seeing trends and opportunities to improve performance.  This is especially true for multi-centred organisations and those providing training in a wide range of sub-areas/occupations where the data requires more detailed analysis.

This workshop demonstrates and explores the data that providers need to understand and supply to achieve success at inspection and how this data can be used on-going to improve performance. Re-examining all data when inspection is first notified is now next to impossible given the very short lead times, therefore the biggest gains are to be made when regular review and validation becomes an integral and scheduled part of provider process.

For Whom

This one day workshop is for WBL Managers and other WBL staff involved in the management and/or delivery of contracts, performance review and Ofsted Inspection.  It is especially suited to Inspection Nominees and Data/Quality Managers. 

This workshop is not suitable for representatives from primary/secondary/higher education or main stream FE, ACL or JC+ provision, as the data used differs significantly from that in work-based learning.

Please note this workshop does not attempt to explain the rational or calculation process for QSR or related data such as distance travelled.  Explanation of the calculations is covered in our workshop “Understanding QSR, Timely Success and Distance Travelled Calculations”

Delivery Style

The workshop consists of a mixture of presenter input, group exercises and discussion.  Example provider performance reports are reviewed and checklists and handouts provided that guide participants through the key issues they need to consider.  The data sets and additional analysis needs are explored through the use of exercises.

This workshop, as with most of our good practice workshops, can be delivered on your premises. This approach is favoured by many of our clients as it provides a quality, value-for-money and highly effective route for staff development.

Running workshops internally, allows participants explore how key issues will impact on them and their organization and as a team begin to agree development action and priorities.

Typical costs for a one day good practice workshop, excluding VAT, are just £1290 + £30/person. Even with groups as small as 6 costs per person costs for internal workshops are lower than attending our open events and savings increase further when delegate travel-time costs and convenience are factored in.

Related Inspection Workshops

Certificates of Professional Development.

Formal Certificates of Development will be issued, by post, to participants who complete this workshop. These certificates will detail the key learning aims and the face-to-face learning hours undertaken, enabling participants to update their CPD records and logs accordingly. The workshop also allows time, during the day, for participants to reflect on and record their personal learning development and consider how best to apply the knowledge gained on return to work. This element of the programme is designed to maximise the benefits from attending and enable participants to make better review judgments when recording their CPD activities.
