Hints, Tips & Guidance on updating SARS to the Sept 2009 CIF requirements for those with good experience of producing SARs
This one day good practice workshop is designed to help experienced Learning and Skills Sector Providers update their existing Self-Assessment processes, Self-Assessment Reports and Quality Improvement Plans to meet better the structure of the latest frameworks and approaches.
The Workshop meets the goals, targets and objectives set out in the “Common Inspection Framework 2009” and the “Ofsted” publication the “Handbook for the inspection of Further education and Skills effective from September 2009”.
The changes to inspection, as outlined in the above documents, are significant and include changes to capacity to improve, equality and diversity together with new indicators such as Safeguarding and Value for Money. When coupled with much shorter notice periods, risk-based planning and the increased focus on validation, Providers’ Self-Assessment and Quality Improvement Action, it is clear that, especially in terms of robustness and effectiveness, it has become essential for Providers to review their Self-Assessment processes early.
The emphasis in the new CIF is on Self-Assessment and Action Planning which leads to “demonstrable improvements” and the SAR will not only be used during inspection it will also play a significant part in the Ofsted risk assessment which will determine when, how and by whom organisations should be inspected. This process is intended to make the Ofsted inspection process less predictable. Consequently it is imperative that all providers review their SAR submissions regularly and ensure that the latest information is kept live on the provider gateway at all times.
Self-Assessment Report needs to align with the New Inspection Framework and Common Evaluation Schedule which means:
- A significantly revised SAR layout
- A new Grading Structure
- Greater emphasis on Capacity to Improve
- Increased significance of Leadership and Management
- Increased Focus on the following Agenda:
- Framework for Excellence
- Every Child Matters
- Safeguarding
- Value for money
- Partnerships
- Governance
For Whom
This workshop is designed for those with experience of producing Self-Assessment reports looking for advice on guidance on improving quality and/or meeting the demands of the 2009 on frameworks.
The workshop is designed for representatives from Providers and Organisations operating within the Further Education/Learning and Skills Sector, such as Apprenticeship Providers, FE/6th Form Colleges and related infrastructure organisations who have good experience of writing and updating Self-Assessment Reports but are now looking for ways to improve quality and meet better the demands of the September 2009 frameworks.
The workshop is not considered suitable for those working in or with in primary/secondary education schools.
It is especially suited to those who have, or who are likely to have, responsibility for managing, updating and/or contributing to the SAR and QIP. This includes those tasked with training staff on the latest requirements and/or those with responsibility for evaluating the quality of SARs/QIPs internally or within third party organisations.
For those new to Self-Assessment Reporting we recommend our related workshop, “Robust Self-Assessment for BEGINNERS (Sept 2009 CIF)”

Formal Certificates of Development will be issued, by post, to participants who complete this workshop. These certificates will detail the key learning aims and the face-to-face learning hours undertaken, enabling participants to update their CPD records and logs accordingly. The workshop also allows time, during the day, for participants to reflect on and record their personal learning development and consider how best to apply the knowledge gained on return to work. This element of the programme is designed to maximise the benefits from attending and enable participants to make better review judgments when recording their CPD activities.
