Helping young people to learn, develop and succeed faster
Personal, learning and thinking skills (PLTS) are now high on the teaching and learning agenda. They are integral to the ‘new’ 2008 on Diplomas but also offer pivotal personal development opportunities for all young people.
Research has also shown that in order to acquire and develop fundamental concepts such as organising oneself, managing change, taking responsibility and perseverance, learners need to develop and apply skills from all of the follow six groups and in a wide range of learning contexts.
- independent enquirers
- creative thinkers
- reflective learners
- team workers
- self-managers
- effective participators
Further more it is recommended that PLTS are incorporated into teaching and leaning at all stages from age 11 to 19
This workshop provides participants with an understanding of the components that make up the PLTS framework and aids relevancy in a variety of contexts. It provides opportunities to consider existing practice and identify ways to introduce or extend techniques in which the development of PLTS are delivered and assessed.
For Whom
This workshop is designed for those who are preparing or just beginning to deliver Diplomas. This could include subject specialists and other team members such as those involved with Functional Skills, tutorials or work experience. It is aimed at practitioners across all consortia types and encourages the breadth of environments to share their experiences and challenges during this workshop.
The workshop will also be attractive to those responsible with the management and development and observation of teaching and learning programmes who need to understand what latest good practice looks like.
The workshop is therefore applicable to private training providers, FE colleges, adult community learning providers, schools and employers. Indeed any and all situations where young people have opportunities to learn.
Aim and objectives
To provide managers, practitioners and employers with the knowledge, ideas and confidence to recognise and try a variety of approaches and techniques to assist their learners in developing PLTS, by:
- Understanding the PLTS framework
- Appreciating the focus range of skills in each skills group
- Relating the framework to government drivers and underlying research
- Recognising the pedagogy supporting each skills group
- Discussing the impact for implementing PLTS delivery
- Exploring techniques and approaches for assessment
- Identifying strategies for implementation activities for planning and X-subject teamwork session 4
- Recognising own personal development in relation to PLTS
Content
Participants experience a range of approaches for developing their understanding whilst exploring and exchanging ideas and techniques to use with their own learners. This workshop provides opportunities to develop techniques or activities to take away, adapt and share whilst developing a greater understanding of the pedagogy underlying the approaches experienced during the day. Participants are encouraged occasionally to move out of their comfort zones and in doing so appreciate how they might be able to apply some of the techniques to their own personal development or that of others.
The day is spilt into 4 sessions
- Developing an understanding of the ‘PLTS’
- Recognising the pedagogy supporting each skills group
- Exploring techniques and approaches for assessment
- Identifying the impact for implementing PLTS delivery and recognising ways to implement
Session 1 – Developing an understanding of the ‘PLTS’
This session is designed to provide the background of PLTS, what they are and where they came from and why they are important, by:
- Reviewing trends identified in research from what employers want, using:
- Recent research documents from government agencies
- White papers, reports and review documents
- Qualification authority findings
- How they fit into the Diplomas
- Gaining an understanding of the PLTS framework and the range of skills to be developed
- Exploring definitions
- Sharing ideas
- Appreciating the focus range of skills in each skills group
- Identifying opportunities
- Considering the impact of skills development
- Relating the framework to government drivers and underlying research, to:
- Current practice
- Curriculum delivery
- Timetabling
- Staffing
- Resourcing
Session 2 – Recognising the pedagogy supporting each skills group
This session builds on the knowledge gained in session 1 to move knowledge into application. It aims to provide delegates with opportunities to share experiences, gain new ones and appreciate how using a range of recognised pedagogical approaches can help develop PLTS in their learners. This session covers:
- Comparisons between traditional and creative facilitation
- Drawing on current and past experiences and outcomes
- Defining a range of pedagogical approaches
- Identifying pedagogy in different forms and contexts
- Experiencing how these techniques might support development of PLTS
- Participating in activities and sharing with peers
- Using techniques creatively for developing thinking skills
- Initiating some mapping of PLTS skills to pedagogical techniques
Session 3 – Exploring techniques and approaches for assessment
This session provides the opportunity to reflect on some of the techniques and approaches used during the day, relate them to the range of PLTS and initiate, develop or adapt techniques or activities for delivery and assessment of progress, by:
- Using a range of props to develop creative ideas
- Taking existing ideas and techniques and adapting or extending
- Considering how progress will be measured and assessed and proposing ideas for further development
- Testing existing techniques and approaches for relevancy, usability and transferability
- Contextualising for your subject areas
Session 4 – Identifying the impact for implementing PLTS delivery and recognising ways to implement
The final session explores what participants might need to prepare for delivery and assessment of PLTS. It aims to recognise the impact for implementing PLTS delivery. Delegates will be given opportunities to reflect on their experiences and shared ideas in order to plan for implementation.
Participants will be provided with time to reflect, consider and evaluate the impact on their own learning from the day’s experiences, by:
- Discussing and recognising impact for implementation and identifying strategies to overcome the challenges
- small group work
- problem solving
- thinking creatively
- Initiate a plan with short, medium and long term milestones
- Using their own planning tool or template provided
- Recognise the components for a well-prepared and structured delivery
- Identify teams with whom to collaborate
- Internal and external
- Make recommendations for resources and environmental changes where appropriate or relevant
- Integrating into the plan
- Make suggestions for support network opportunities outside of this workshop
- With other participants or external colleagues
Learning will be facilitated through:
- Reflection and sharing personal experiences
- Small group or pair work
- Participating in a variety of approaches and techniques
- Working with and supporting peers
- Thinking creatively

Certificates of Professional Development.
Formal Certificates of Development will be issued, by post, to participants who complete this workshop. These certificates will detail the key learning aims and the face-to-face learning hours undertaken, enabling participants to update their CPD records and logs accordingly. The workshop also allows time, during the day, for participants to reflect on and record their personal learning development and consider how best to apply the knowledge gained on return to work. This element of the programme is designed to maximise the benefits from attending and enable participants to make better review judgments when recording their CPD activities.
