An Introduction to observing, recording, grading and judging
The quality, accuracy and robustness of internal observation of teaching and training, plays a pivotal role in developing the quality of teaching and informing provider self-assessment.
Where teaching and training session grades and judgements are inaccurate or inconsistent, the SAR decisions and related improvement action is likely to be seriously flawed. Inspection now focuses heavily on capacity to improve, making it is essential for all providers to have an effective OTL system in place; one that that generates robust and reliable judgments about teaching, training and learning performance, and in turn, drives continuous improvement.
Whilst an effective OTL system with trained staff has implications for both SAR and Inspection outcomes, it can also have implications for internal morale as poor observation practice often leads to a negative or adverse impact on staff attitudes and confidence.
The effectiveness of any OTL system is dependent on the skill of those carrying out the observations consequently it is essential that all observers are well-trained and able to make robust, reliable and consistent judgments and grade sessions accurately.
This workshop provides an introduction to these skills, helping observers approach graded training and lesson observations in a confident and effective manner.
For Whom
This workshop has been designed primarily for staff with limited or no observation of teaching and training experience. However Delegate feedback from previous OTL workshops has shown consistently that participants, including those with some experience, can benefit significantly from participating in this workshop as it builds confidence in interpreting observation criteria, recording performance notes, producing judgments and grading, developed considerably.
The approaches covered work equally well in schools, colleges, LEAs, Private training Providers large and small and internal company training departments in fact anywhere that the quality of formal teaching, training and learning needs to be evaluated.
Aims and Objectives
To help participants develop the skills and knowledge required to undertake effective observation of teaching and training sessions. As a result of attending this day participants will understand, or better understand:
- the key components of the observation of teaching & training (OTL) process
- the attributes of good teachers and characteristics of good and poor teaching and training sessions
and understand how to:
- prepare effectively for an observation
- interpret criteria to judge the effectiveness of teaching and training
- record accurate, meaningful and judgemental rather than descriptive performance notes, providing a robust evidence base for judgements
- develop accurate and fair judgements from the recorded performance notes evidence
- grade sessions based upon the judgements made
Content
Key aspects of the workshop, in addition to presentations by the tutor will include:
- interactive discussion on the key components of the OTL process
- observing video of teaching and training followed by interactive discussion
- practical group and individual problem solving exercises in identifying different observation techniques, interpreting observation criteria, recording performance notes, and producing judgements
- practical OTL exercises involving observation of video teaching sessions, recording performance notes, producing judgements and session grading.
Delivery Style
Learning will be facilitated through:
- presentation of examples of good practice
- group and individual problem solving exercises
- analysis and evaluation of video demonstrations
- group role play exercises
- tutor feedback to individuals
- participants’ critical evaluation of their own skills and knowledge
- comparative analysis of the skills and knowledge demonstrated by other workshop participants.

Certificates of Professional Development.
Formal Certificates of Development will be issued, by post, to participants who complete this workshop. These certificates will detail the key learning aims and the face-to-face learning hours undertaken, enabling participants to update their CPD records and logs accordingly. The workshop also allows time, during the day, for participants to reflect on and record their personal learning development and consider how best to apply the knowledge gained on return to work. This element of the programme is designed to maximise the benefits from attending and enable participants to make better review judgments when recording their CPD activities.
