Effective use of milestones, progress tracking and staff performance review to improve learner achievement and success rates
Most organisations now have systems in place to track learner progress - but how well do they work? The effectiveness of the process directly affects learner progress and achievement – in other words ‘provider performance, contract renewal and bottom line’ profit. Success Rates and Timely Success Rates are excellent measures of how well a programme has worked. They are however measures of past performance. If these figures are not good, it is usually too late to do anything about those learners because they have left the programme.
Effective progress tracking systems using appropriate milestones, ensure that the organisation knows precisely, on a month by month basis, which:
- Learners are not where they should be, in relation to their NVQ, Key Skills, Technical Certificate, and by how much
- Learners are where they should be, and which ones are ahead and by how much
- Assessors and subject Tutors (Key Skills, Technical Certificate etc), are having difficulties progressing learners at the expected rate
- Assessors and subject Tutors are performing very well or better.
With this type of performance information, managers are in a position to take precise action to ensure that ‘at risk’ learners, do not become early leavers, and that any staff who need support are identified quickly.
Any level of learner drop out is damaging to the learner’s well-being and the organisation’s income and contract renewal/extension opportunities. This workshop will ensure that participants are able to identify how progress tracking and Assessor and performance management can be further developed to ensure optimum performance. In simple terms the workshop will help participants ensure that their organisations are doing all they can to keep learners on track to achievement.
For Whom
This intense and highly interactive workshop is for managers with responsibility for maximising learner progress, success and achievement within training programmes. The main focus of the workshop is Apprenticeship, Train to Gain and NVQ type programmes
Workshop Objectives
To enable participants to design and implement effective learner progress tracking, and Assessor performance management systems. As a result of attending this workshop participants will be able to describe and explain:
- The function and value of Learning Programme Progress Milestones
- How milestones link to Performance Targets and effective learner progress tracking
- Different methods of producing “Progress Milestone Performance Targets”
- Individual and Group approaches to the use of Milestone Performance Targets
- How to use spreadsheets to monitor learner progress
- How percentage progress data can be calculated from Milestone Performance Targets
- How accountability for learner progress is ensured through effective performance management
- How to achieve effective Assessor work planning and management
- How to improve Assessment Planning and link it to Milestone Performance Targets
- How to develop greater learner commitment to the Assessment process
Content
Delivery of progress tracking will involve interactive discussions, practical group problem solving exercises, case study analysis, and individual learning activities focused on:
- What Learning Programme Progress Milestones are and how they can be best used?
- What Progress Milestone Performance Targets are and how they related to milestones and facilitate precise identification of learner progress?
- How spreadsheets can be used to facilitate both individualised learner progress tracking and group focus learner progress tracking, and calculating accurate percentage progress figures?
- Developing management systems so that there is direct accountability for learner progress and effective Assessor work planning and management
- The value of ensuring that Assessment Planning is linked to Milestone Performance Targets.
- Techniques to improve learner commitment to the Assessment process.
Learning will be facilitated through:
- Practical analysis and evaluation of methods, tools and techniques
- Tutor feedback to individuals
- Participants’ critical evaluation of their organisation’s approach to managing learner progress tracking
- Group and individual problem solving exercises
- Comparative analysis of their organisation’s practices, with the experience and arrangements used by other workshop participants’ organisations.

Certificates of Professional Development.
Formal Certificates of Development will be issued, by post, to participants who complete this workshop. These certificates will detail the key learning aims and the face-to-face learning hours undertaken, enabling participants to update their CPD records and logs accordingly. The workshop also allows time, during the day, for participants to reflect on and record their personal learning development and consider how best to apply the knowledge gained on return to work. This element of the programme is designed to maximise the benefits from attending and enable participants to make better review judgments when recording their CPD activities.
